The Battle of the Bulge claimed many lives on both sides. In this last stage of the Second World War during the winter of 1945, brave men gave their lives for the final victory, while others sacrificed theirs in a last attempt to stop them. Both motives ensured a fierce fight.
While the US Army withstood the German attacks on the besieged Belgian town of Bastogne time and time again during the Ardennes Offensive, it became the epicenter of what is now known as the Battle of the Bulge.

Many of the fallen, both American and German would be buried at this cemetery from February 1945. From 1948 the 2700 American fallen were transferred to the cemetery at Henri-Chapelle, while the Belgian authorities gathered the German fallen from other graves across the area here at Recogne or at the German War Cemetery in Lommel. Today the cemetery contains the graves of 6807 German soldiers.

Beautifully and respectfully presented. I visited the area in about 1984, and it is indeed hallowed ground.
