In the German city of Hermeskeil, Trier-Saarburg district, in Rhineland-Palatinate, is a private museum on steam locomotives. Although the museum has objects from a large period in history, the trains and carts are mostly from the 12 years Nazi era and the Second World War.
The museum is a private collection and open according to the website’s information. In 2024 the original website states that incorrect information goes around on the internet that the museum is closed. Always check out the original website found using the German name – Dampflok-museum Hermeskeil. The website is in German but Google translate will help you understand. In their collection are schwere Kriegslokomotive and Güterzuglokomotive (Eng. Heavy war locomotives and freight locomotives), Demag rail cranes, small diesel locomotives and more from the Deutsches Reichsbahn (the name the Germans used for their rail fleet during the Deutches Reich period).
On most of the site, the trains are parked outside and are not always in good condition. Some have tarps that are already decaying. But don’t underestimate the beauty of this place, it’s great to see this collection outside in the sunshine. You walk freely in a quiet place surrounded by history. Well-maintained models are located in the depot building near the turntable.

The museum is not accessible to wheelchairs and people with mobility problems. There are no walkways between the trains and across the tracks, the space between the trains is narrow and overgrown. In 2024 the entry fee was only 5 euro’s, a visit will take up two to three hours.
