
A WWII American Coastal Defence Hub
Nestled atop the Blackdown Hills near Honiton, Devon, the Dunkeswell Airfield Heritage Centre offers a compelling glimpse into the region’s pivotal wartime role. Founded in September 2016, this volunteer-run centre preserves the legacy of RAF Dunkeswell—built in 1942–43 and later transformed into Europe’s only US Navy airbase during WWII, following occupation by USAAF’s 479th Anti‑Submarine Squadron and the US Navy’s Fleet Air Wing 7



What’s Inside
Photographic archive: Over 400 images, featuring daily life from aircrew briefings and coastal patrol sorties to U‑boat hunts over the Bay of Biscay. Archive film & missions: Rare footage depicts anti-submarine operations and briefing sessions aboard B‑24 Liberators. Artifacts & replica uniforms: Displays include authentic period uniforms, mission logs, aircraft models, and interactive dioramas. Personal accounts: Features testimonies of USAAF/USN personnel, including a dedicated section on the 44th Bomb Group. Memorial Roll of Honour: Commemorates those who served and sacrificed at Dunkeswell

Visit
There is lots of space for your car. Around the airfield and museum are buildings from the former WW2 airfield to be seen. A guided tour can take you to the airfield and inform you of its surrounding buildings. The museum is building is partially wheelchair accessible via temporary ramp.
