Panzerwerk A8 West
The Nipter Schleife (Eng. Nipter Loop) was named after the village nearby. Nietoperek was named Nipter when the lands belonged to Germany. As part of the Holgangsystem tunnel system, the Nipter Loop comprises nine individual chambers that were intended to serve, among other things, as storage space for ammunition. At the end of the Nipter Schleife is the unfinished armored works Panzerwerk A8. Panzerwerk A8 was divded in Panzerwerk A8 West and Panzerwerk A8 Ost. The A stands for Artillerie, it were supposed to be artillery spots.
Construction on the Pz.w. A8 West started in 1939/ 1940 but it was never finished, Panzerwerk A8 Ost was never finished as well.
Together with the armored works, Panzerwerk 721, Panzerwerk 722, Panzerwerk 724, Panzerwerk 726 and Panzerwerk 727 they formed the Werkgruppe York. In total there are 106 Panzerwerke divided over 13 Werkgruppe on the Festungsfront Oder-Warthe-Bogen connected with an underground Holgangsystem.
Visit
The bunkers and tunnels are not open to roam freely. There is a serious hazard when you want to visit them without guides because the tunnels are 30 meter below the bunkers, a fall would cause serious injuries and worse. The bunkers and tunnels are a bat heaven, about 36.000 bats of different types live here.
