German bunkers – Splinter-Proof Shelters – Ketrzyn, Poland
In Ketrzyn, Poland, there are two German bunkers. These bunkers were built in 1942. They are splinter-proof shelters, bombing raids were expected or had already begun. At the beginning of World War II, Ketrzyn was located on German territory. At that time, the town was called Rastenburg.
The bunkers were built as air raid shelters and provide protection against bombs and artillery fire; they were not built for defensive purposes.
The bunkers are located in a park on the edge of a civilian cemetery, separated by a road (leading to Adlof Hitler’s headquarters – Wulf’s Lair). Both bunkers are open to visitors 24 hours a day but are not accessible.
The bunkers are located nest to the road (592) that leads to Adolf Hitler’s Wolf’s lair – Wolfsschanze. Hitler’s Headquarters from which he led the invasion of Russia, Operation Barbarossa.
