The Sturmabteilung (SA), or Storm Detachments, was a paramilitary wing of the Nazi Party, founded in 1920. Led by Ernst Röhm, the SA was responsible for street violence, intimidation, and protecting Nazi leaders. It played a crucial role in Adolf Hitler’s rise to power. However, its power was diminished during the Night of the Long Knives in 1934, when many leaders were purged, and the SS rose to prominence.
