The Battle of Crete, fought from May 20 to June 1, 1941, was a pivotal conflict between German and Allied forces on the Greek island of Crete during World War II. It was the first major airborne invasion, with German Fallschirmjäger (paratroopers) assaulting the island. Despite initial successes, the Allies, including British, Australian, and New Zealand troops, were ultimately overwhelmed, leading to a German victory and the island’s occupation until 1945. The German name for the operation was Unternehmen Merkur (Eng. Operation Mercury).
