The Battle of Dunkirk, fought from May 26 to June 4, 1940, was a critical engagement during the German invasion of France. Surrounded by German forces, over 330,000 British and Allied troops were evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk via Operation Dynamo. Despite constant Luftwaffe attacks, a mix of naval vessels and civilian boats enabled a successful retreat. The evacuation preserved a large portion of the Allied army for future operations.
