The Cromwell tank was a British cruiser tank used in World War II. Fast and reliable, it featured a 75mm gun and Christie suspension. Deployed after the Normandy invasion, it excelled in reconnaissance and flanking roles. Though lightly armored, it was valued for speed and maneuverability in Allied armored divisions. Its chassis was used for different kinds of tanks and vehicles throughout WW2.
The name “Cromwell” was initially applied to three vehicles during development. Early Cromwell development led to the creation of the A24 Cavalier. Later Cromwell development led to the creation of the competing Tank, Cruiser, Mk VIII, Centaur. This was closely related to the Cromwell, both vehicles being externally similar. The Cromwell and Centaur tanks differed in the engine used.
