The Waffen-SS was the combat branch of the SS (Schutzstaffel), functioning as an elite military force of Nazi Germany during World War II. It operated under the command of the SS rather than the regular German Army (Wehrmacht). The organization expanded from a small guard unit to over 38 divisions, composed of both German and foreign volunteers. Waffen-SS units were involved in major military operations across Europe, including the Eastern Front and Normandy. Despite its combat effectiveness, the Waffen-SS was responsible for numerous war crimes and was declared a criminal organization after the war.
