Vickers Machine Gun Emplacement (first) – Axmouth, United Kingdom

Vickers Machine Gun Emplacement (first) – Axmouth, United Kingdom

Next to the B3172 connecting road from Axmouth to Boshil Hill road lies a bunker from the Taunton stop line. The bunker is a Vickers Machine Gun Emplacement and overlooks the fields towards the River Ax. During the Second World War, the bunker had seven or eight other defensive positions around it, along with an anti-tank ditch. The Vickers Machine Gun Emplacement is distinctive because it is an entirely concrete bunker. Many bunkers in the Taunton stop line are brick fortification rings, sometimes supplemented with concrete sections. This bunker is a rectangular medium machine gun type pillbox, with large embrasure; half set into ground. It is situated above flood plain on the east side of the river Axe with a field of fire westwards across the river.
The bunker has been closed by the landowner.
