This memorial commemorates the volunteers in the service of the Free French Forces who died for France either fighting or in captivity during World War Two.

The Free French Forces (Forces Françaises Libres) was an army formed by the government-in-exile in London in June 1940 after the Fall of France to Nazi Germany and led by General Charles de Gaulle. On the 1st of August 1943 the Free French Forces merged with the Army of Africa (L’Armée d’Afrique) to form the French Liberation Army (Armée Française de la Libération or short AFL).

The inscription on the memorial beneath the statue translates to:

To the volunteers of the Free French Forces who died for the honor and the freedom of France, 18 June 1940 – 8 May 1945
