Eternal Flame of Peace – Hiroshima, Japan – Saskia de Bel

The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, located in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, was established in 1955 to convey the horror and human suffering caused by the world’s first atomic bombing on August 6, 1945. Its mission is to educate visitors about the devastating effects of nuclear weapons and to advocate for lasting world peace. The museum consists of two main buildings: the East Building, which presents the history of Hiroshima before and after the bombing and the ongoing global effort toward nuclear disarmament; and the Main Building, which focuses on the human experience of the bombing itself.

Inside, visitors encounter powerful exhibits, including photographs, melted artifacts, clothing, watches stopped at 8:15 a.m., and personal belongings of victims—each telling a story of unimaginable loss and resilience. Testimonies from survivors, known as hibakusha, offer deeply personal insights into the suffering caused by radiation and the long-term effects on human life. Despite the tragedy it portrays, the museum’s message is one of hope and renewal. Surrounded by the tranquil grounds of the Peace Memorial Park, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum stands as both a memorial and a warning, urging humanity never to repeat such devastation and to work together toward a peaceful, nuclear-free future.
