During World War II, Belgium was fortified with bunkers as part of the German Atlantic Wall defense system. These bunkers were constructed along the coast to prevent Allied invasions. Many, like those near Oostende, housed artillery and defensive positions. Some bunkers remain today as historical sites and war memorials.
