This T1100 Truppenmannschaftsbunker is a civilian variant air raid shelter located in a city park of Kiel. It was constructed in 1943 and could provide shelter for up to 1100 people during air raids.
The bunker has three entrance blocks (“Splitterschutzvorbauten”) instead of the standard two. The interior has four floors above-ground and a basement level. The walls of the bunker are around two meters thick. On top of the roof is a ventilation/observation tower.
Kriegsmarine naval base
During World War Two, Kiel was a crucial German naval base and U-boat production hub, suffering immense destruction from Allied bombing raids, which levelled over 80% of its old town and 83% of industrial areas. The city, heavily fortified with anti-aircraft guns, was central to the Kriegsmarine’s war effort.

After WWII

The bunker was de-fortified in 1949 and converted into an industrial building. The windows installed at that time have since been sealed again in later years.

Visit
Today, rehearsal rooms for music groups are located behind the two-meter-thick concrete walls. The outside of the bunker can be visited freely.
