A monument with the names of fallen civilians and soldiers from the First and Second World Wars is located near the church of Oesel, a stone’s throw from the Vierfrontenbrug (Eng. Four-Fronts Bridge).
A commemorative plaque has been added to the moment. Attention is paid to the soldiers of the 19th Line Regiment who fought here during the German invasion of Belgium during the Battle of the Lei from May 24, 1940 until the Belgian surrender on May 28, 1940.
The text reads:
19th LINE REGIMENT
“TO HIS FALLEN,
AND TO ALL HIS BOLDNESS,
WHO WERE IN DESPAIR,
HERE FOR THE SALVATION OF THE LAND,
HAVE FIGHTED”.
1940 – Lys
