The Battle of Normandy, launched on June 6, 1944 (D-Day), was a major Allied campaign during World War II to liberate Western Europe from Nazi control. Codenamed Operation Overlord, it began with amphibious and airborne landings on five beachheads—Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. Allied forces, including American, British, Canadian, and Free French troops, faced strong German resistance. The battle lasted until late August 1944, resulting in the liberation of Paris. It was a pivotal victory that led to the Allied advance into Germany, marking a turning point on the Western Front.
