The Aalborg Defence and Garrison Museum (Aalborg Forsvars- og Garnisonsmuseum) is one of Denmark’s most impressive military museums, housed in a vast World War II seaplane hangar built by the German Luftwaffe during the occupation. The authentic setting on the Limfjord gives visitors a striking sense of history.
Opened in 2002, the museum covers over 10,000 square metres of indoor and outdoor exhibition space. It presents the story of Denmark’s “Total Defence”—including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Home Guard, Police, and Civil Defence—from the German occupation through the Cold War to modern NATO operations.

Exhibits include tanks, artillery, aircraft, uniforms, weapons, and a preserved German command bunker. Visitors can sit in vehicles and cockpits, explore hands-on displays, and learn about Aalborg’s long role as a garrison town since the 18th century.
Operated by dedicated volunteers, many with military backgrounds, the museum offers personal insights and an engaging, family-friendly atmosphere. It’s open daily from spring to autumn, with guided tours available for groups.
