A collection of our Battle of the Bulge articles. The Battle of the Bulge, also called the Ardennes Offensive or Ardennenoffensive in German took place from 16 December 1944 until 28 January 1945. It was a surprise attack by the German forces on the Allied, mostly American, troops in the Ardennes region in Belgium. The operation was codenamed “Wacht am Rhein”, Guard at the Rhine river. It was Germany’s last major operation of the war at the Western front. The northern part of this operation was named Operation Herbstnebel. The Germans planned a northern assault into the southern part of the Netherlands to lure allied forces up north and create a better opportunity in the Belgium Ardennes with their main assault. Another part was Operation Schneeman, this was a largley unrealised plan, parts were added and adjusted into Operation Herbstnebel.
