On the main square in Bastogne is a bust of General Mc Auliffe. He and his American troops withstood the brunt of the German attack on Bastogne during the Battle of Bastogne in December 1944. General Mc Auliffe’s headquarters were at what now are ‘the Bastogne Barracks‘ and where you visit a museum with lots of vehicles of World War Two and visit the rooms where General Mc Auliffe and his staff commanded the soldiers on the battlefield like the 101st Airborne Division which arrived just before the assault started. After the German request to the Americans for surrender, General Mc Auliffe replied with ‘Nuts’.
Next to the bust of General Mc Auliffe is a Sherman M4 Tank. The tank was put out of action in December 1944 and is transformed into a memorial. They named the tank ‘Barracuda’.
General Mc Auliffe’s bust and the M4 Sherman are to be seen at Place Général Mc Auliffe in Bastogne in the corner of a parking lot.
