On the main square in Bastogne is a bust of General McAuliffe. This General and his American troops withstood the brunt of the German attack on Bastogne during the Battle of Bastogne in December 1944.

Bastogne Barracks

General McAuliffe’s headquarters were at what now are ‘the Bastogne Barracks‘ and where you visit a museum with lots of vehicles of World War Two and visit the rooms where General McAuliffe and his staff commanded the soldiers on the battlefield like the 101st Airborne Division which arrived just before the assault started. After the German request to the Americans for surrender, General McAuliffe replied with ‘Nuts’.

Sherman Tank Barracuda

Next to the bust of General McAuliffe is a Sherman M4 Tank. The tank was put out of action in December 1944 and is transformed into a memorial. They named the tank ‘Barracuda’.

General McAuliffe’s bust and the M4 Sherman are to be seen at Place Général McAuliffe in Bastogne in the corner of a parking lot.
