Salpa Line

The Salpa Line was a major Finnish defensive system constructed along the country’s eastern border between 1940 and 1944. Built after the Winter War, it was designed to halt a potential Soviet invasion. The strongest fortifications were concentrated in southeastern Finland, where reinforced-concrete bunkers, anti-tank obstacles, trenches, artillery positions, and machine-gun emplacements formed a defence in depth. Construction continued during the Continuation War, but the Salpa Line was never subjected to major combat. Its formidable fortifications nevertheless served as an important deterrent and provided Finland with a final defensive barrier against a possible Soviet advance.
