The Italian Royal Army (Regio Esercito) was Italy’s primary military force during World War II, fighting alongside Axis powers. It participated in campaigns in North Africa, Greece, and the Soviet Union, but suffered heavy defeats, particularly in Libya and Stalingrad. After Italy’s 1943 surrender, the army split, with some factions supporting the Allies while others remained loyal to the fascist regime, continuing to fight until the war’s end.
