
The SPA TM40 was developed by Fiat and entered service in 1942. TM or Trattrice Media would give the idea of a medium heavy tractor but it is an heavy tractor. It was developed to tow the Italian 5 ton heavy artillery pieces. The Società Piemontese Automobili (SPA) was a department of the Fiat company specialized in trucks.




It towed both the 149 mm Artillery and the 90 mm Anti-aircraft gun. 153 truck were specially made for the German Wehrmacht, some of these had the wooden “Einheits” cabine. These were referred to as the Fiat-SPA T40.
While the T40 had a crew of 2 the TM40 artillery tractor had a crew of 2 plus 6. It was 4,68 meters long, had 4 wheel steering and had a top speed of 43,35 km/h. Around 300 Fiat-SPA TM40 trucks were made, it was taken out of service in 1949.
