On Februari 29th 1940, this area was the scene of the most severe air battle of the Winter War, during which 7 Finnish and 3 Soviet fighters were shot down and claiming the lives of four Finnish and two Soviet pilots.
This memorial commemorates the fallen aviators of the air battles during the Winter War.

The plaque reads:
Honor to the aviators who fell during the war, who made the supreme sacrifice for the freedom of our homeland.

You can visit the memorial freely, following the Ukonsalmentie road South past the church of the Ruokolahti Cemetery.
