Codenamed Operation Overlord, it involved a massive amphibious assault by American, British, Canadian, and other Allied forces on five beachheads: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. The invasion aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi occupation. It was the largest amphibious operation in history and marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, eventually leading to its surrender in May 1945.
