Mémorial de Bruneval commemorates Operation Biting (the Bruneval Raid), the British airborne raid of 27–28 February 1942 to capture components of a German Würzburg radar at La Poterie-Cap-d’Antifer. The raid was commanded by Major John Frost and was successfully evacuated by sea.
The memorial was inaugurated in June 2012, and the site includes a detailed account of the operation and its significance to Allied radar intelligence.
Visit
The Operation Biting, Bruneval Raid monument is open to the public. A replica of a landing craft is located near the monument. From the monument, you look down at Villa Stella Maris, which can also visited (not accessible) via a flight of stairs. The small beach itself is nothing special. Over the years, the Vf personnel bunker has been excavated and is now open to visitors. Numerous information panels tell the story of the Bruneval Raid. At the top of the opposite hill, you can see a German observation post that was put out of action by British paratroopers during the operation.
The parking area is free of charge (2026), and the monument can be reached via a short walk.
