The War Memorial in Oerrel displays the names of German soldiers along with the location, countries, or sea where they perished. This unconventional design immediately attracted attention and provides insight into the scale of the conflict throughout Europe during the war years 1939–1945. People in Russia may have died in captivity as well as in the fighting on the Eastern Front, which could also apply to post-war camps and France. Other European countries also used German prisoners as cheap labor under poor conditions and to perform dangerous tasks such as clearing minefields, but Russia and France are known for having exploited large groups of German soldiers in captivity for a long time after the war.
