Renault R 35 – French Light Tank

The French Renault R 35 tank was developed from 1933, in 1935 the definite design was chosen and its production started in 1936. It was slow but well armored (up to 45mm) and intended as an infantry support tank, with a short barrelled 37mm SA 18 gun and a 7.5 mm MAC 31 machine gun. Unfortunately this armament proved inadequate against German armor during World War Two.
The R 35 weighed 10.6 tons. Powered by a Renault 4-cylinder, 82 hp petrol engine, it had a top speed of 20 km/h (12 mph) and a range of 140 km (87 mi). Like most French tanks of this time it had a one-man turret, which overburdened the commander. Despite its drawbacks, the Renault R35 tank was widely used by France and later by Axis forces after the fall of France in 1940.

The R 35 tank in the pictures is on display in the Musée des Blindes, tank museum in Saumur, France.
