Renault AMR 33 – French Light Tank

The Automitrailleuse de Reconnaissance Renault Modèle 1933, or short AMR 33 or Renault VM, was a Renault Model 1933 Reconnaissance Armored Car. This French light tank was developed in 1932 and was produced from 1933 until 1935. It saw action during the early stages of World War II.

Weighing 5.5 tons, it was armed with a 7.5 mm Reibel MAC 31 machine gun, making it primarily suited for scouting rather than direct combat. Powered by a Renault 4-cylinder, 85 hp petrol engine, it had a top speed of 60 km/h (37 mph) and a range of 200 km (124 mi), offering excellent mobility. Its 13 mm of armor provided minimal protection against enemy fire. Designed for fast reconnaissance and supporting cavalry units, the AMR 33 was agile but mechanically unreliable, and it was quickly outclassed by more modern armored vehicles as the war progressed. Only 123 pieces of the AMR 33 were built.

The AMR tank in the pictures is on display in the Musée des Blindes in Saumur.
