When in the late 1920s the Finnish Army called for a pistol that could withstand Finland’s harsh winters, the design of the Lahti L-35, a Finnish semi-automatic pistol, started in 1929 under the supervision of Aimo Lahti. A patent for the m/35 Lahti pistol was granted in 1935 and the sidearm was adopted by the Finnish military in the same year as the Lahti L-35.
Chambered for the 9×19 mm Parabellum cartridge, it was built to function reliably in the harsh winter conditions of Finland, where extreme cold often caused other firearms to malfunction. One of the pistol’s distinctive features is its robust construction and an innovative bolt accelerator, which helps ensure reliable cycling even in freezing temperatures. The L-35 has an eight-round detachable magazine and operates using a short-recoil, locked-breech system. Although it resembles the German Luger P08 in appearance, its internal mechanism is significantly different and more durable.
World War Two
The Lahti L-35 saw extensive service during the Winter War (1939–1940) and the Continuation War (1941–1944) against the Soviet Union. Finnish soldiers valued the gun for its exceptional reliability, accuracy, and ruggedness. Production numbers were relatively limited, a total of 9,000 were produced between 1935 and 1951, making original examples highly sought after by collectors today.
Later versions
The pistol also influenced Swedish firearms development, leading to the licensed production of the Husqvarna m/40, a modified version of the Lahti L-35, between 1940 and 1946. The m/40 gun was in use by the Swedish Army until the 1980s.
