The M15A1 tank transporter trailer was an improved U.S. Army heavy semi-trailer used during and after World War II as part of the M25 “Dragon Wagon” system. Built to carry heavy armored vehicles, it was towed by the M26 or M26A1 tractor.

The M15A1 featured a low-bed design with multiple axles to distribute weight and improve stability. Compared to the earlier M15, the A1 version had structural reinforcements, improved suspension, and stronger loading ramps, increasing reliability under heavy loads. It was rated to carry vehicles of up to 45 tons, such as the M4 Sherman and damaged tanks recovered from the battlefield. The M15A1 trailer was an evolution of the M15 semi-trailer. The payload was slightly increased (45 tons instead of 40) and can be easily recognised by the ramps above the wheels.

The trailer played a vital role in armored logistics, enabling rapid movement and recovery of tanks while reducing mechanical wear and conserving fuel.

The Dragon Wagon

The M26 Heavy Tank Transporter Tractor and M26A1 Improved Heavy Tank Transporter Tractor were part of the U.S. Army’s M25 “Dragon Wagon” system. Several related types and variants existed, covering tractors and trailers used for heavy tank transport and recovery during and after World War II. The combination of the M26 Heavy Tank Transporter Tractor or M26A1 Improved Heavy Tank Tansporter Tractor with the M15 or M15A1 trailer was called the Dragon Wagon.
