The GMC CCKW 2.5-ton 6×6 truck is also known as Jimmy. It was a highly successful truck with off-road capabilities. It was produced in large numbers, 575,200 pieces, and in numerous versions by General Motors Corporation.
The 353 version is the longer version and the truck in the photos is the M16A1 Machine Shop.
GMC CCKW-353 Machine Shop
The GMC CCKW-353 Machine Shop was a specialized modification of the GMC CCKW-353 2.5-ton 6×6 truck, designed for mobile repair and maintenance operations during World War II. Based on the standard CCKW-353 chassis, this version was equipped with a range of tools and equipment to support field repairs of vehicles and machinery, particularly in combat zones where stationary workshops were impractical.
The GMC CCKW-353 was powered by a GMC 270-cubic inch inline 6-cylinder engine, producing 93 horsepower. This allowed it to reach a top speed of 56 km/h (35 mph) and a range of approximately 320 km (200 miles). The Machine Shop version retained the CCKW’s ruggedness and off-road capabilities, making it well-suited for harsh battlefield conditions.
The Machine Shop version featured a reinforced cargo bed with built-in tool compartments, workbenches, and storage for spare parts. It was also equipped with a mechanical winch and hydraulic lifting equipment for heavy repairs. Additionally, it often included a generating set to power tools and welding equipment for repairs in the field.
The GMC CCKW-353 Machine Shop played a critical role in ensuring that military vehicles and equipment could be maintained and repaired in forward operating areas, contributing to the sustained combat readiness of the Allied forces during WWII.
