In Elbląg, Poland, there is a public monument featuring a Soviet T-34/85 tank, a landmark tied to military history and the city’s post-war heritage.

The monument consists of a T-34-85 medium tank, a Soviet WWII design that became one of the most iconic tanks of the war. It was installed as a monument in May 1976, during the communist era, and has remained a recognizable historical object in Elbląg ever since. The monument was originally placed to commemorate the 1st Warsaw Armoured Regiment “Heroes of Westerplatte” and their fight against the Nazi occupiers. A plaque at its base refers to this connection. The tank became something of a local landmark and rite of passage for residents; at times it has been repainted and discussed publicly in debates about how military monuments should be treated in the post-communist era.

The monument has faced occasional debates about removal or relocation, especially in light of Polish efforts to reconsider Soviet period memorials. Local groups have worked to preserve it, and it is sometimes seen as part of the city’s heritage despite political shifts.
