The Scammel Pioneer started out as an 6×4 Heavy Artillery Tractor but had conversions to Recovery Vehicles and Tank Transporters. The 6×4 was an off-road design and had very good pulling power on rough grounds. The Artillery Tractor was developed in 1936, many were lost during the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from France when Germany overwhelmed the Allied forces with their Blitzkrieg tactics in 1940.
The Scammel Pioneer Recovery Vehicle SV2S had a simplified crane with greater lift height than the SV1S version. A pair of tracks could be fitted over the two rear wheels, giving the Scammel halftrack capabilities when pulling out or lifting heavy weights. Almost 2000 Scammel Recovery Truck were built by the end of the war.
